The area of Guatemala is 108,889 square kilometers, crossed by two main mountain ranges with numerous rivers and covered by tropical jungles, wooded plains and many lakes. Among its main geographical features are 34 volcanoes, of which 3 are active.


Guatemala can be visited at any time of the year: its average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. It has two seasons: the rainy season from May to October and the dry season from November to April.

The average temperature in the highland region is 18.3C (64.9F), 25.3C (77F) on the coast and in Guatemala city the temperature remains 19C (66.2F).


The official language is Spanish, as well as 21 languages of Maya origin, 1 Xinca and 1 Garifuna.


The official currency is the Quetzal (Q). U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are accepted at all main tourism sites.


The Guatemalan constitution guarantees freedom of worship. The prevailing religion is Roman Catholic, but there are some tendencies towards evangelical Christianity. Some Mayan communities practice a combination of Catholicism with pre-Columbian rites.
